Overview

Since 1 March 2025, Iraq scrapped its old visa-on-arrival counters for around 37 nationalities — including most Europeans, Americans and Britons — and replaced them with a mandatory pre-arrival e-Visa at evisa.iq. It's a genuine self-service system: create an account, fill in your details, upload a passport scan and photo, and pay online — no embassy visit and no agent needed for eligible nationalities. The federal e-Visa is valid for entry through Baghdad, Basra and Najaf, and also covers travel to the Kurdistan Region.

Not every nationality qualifies. Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and most African passport holders (outside organized pilgrimage groups) currently can't use the standard e-Visa route and need a different process — check the eligibility list on evisa.iq before assuming you qualify. Journalists and NGO workers are also excluded from the e-Visa and must apply through an Iraqi embassy or consulate instead.

Visa categories

Visit / Tourism e-VisaSingle entry, up to 30 days, for sightseeing and visiting relic sites.

Documents checklist

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months, with at least one blank page
  • Digital passport-style photo: neutral expression, no smile, looking straight ahead, white or light gray background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Details of your first accommodation in Iraq
  • Proof of sufficient funds, or a sponsor/host if you can't demonstrate this yourself
  • Credit or debit card for online payment

Step-by-step application process

  1. 1. Check your nationality is eligible

    Confirm you're on the current eligible list at evisa.iq — only apply through this official domain, since lookalike agency sites charge markups for nothing.

  2. 2. Complete the online form

    Enter your personal, passport and accommodation details.

  3. 3. Upload your passport scan and photo

    Follow the photo specification carefully — a smiling or off-angle photo is a common rejection reason.

  4. 4. Pay online

    Pay the visa fee (around $160 USD as of 2026, though this changes) by card.

  5. 5. Receive your e-Visa by email

    Print a copy to present at the airport alongside your passport.
