Overview

The Government of the Netherlands publishes a country-by-country guide to applying for a Dutch Schengen visa at netherlandsworldwide.nl — select your country of residence and it tells you exactly where to submit your application, almost always a local VFS Global application centre. You gather your own documents from a checklist tailored to your travel purpose, book your own appointment directly with VFS Global, and attend it yourself. The government explicitly tells applicants: "avoid unnecessary costs and book your appointment yourself — do not make an appointment through an intermediary."

You must appear in person. Someone else cannot submit your application for you, even if you're under 18 — every applicant, regardless of age, must appear personally at the appointment.

Documents checklist

  • Valid passport (check that your travel document type is recognized by the Netherlands before applying)
  • Completed application form
  • Two biometric photos, 35×45mm, white background
  • Travel/health insurance mandatory for all Schengen countries, minimum €30,000 coverage
  • Bank statements from the last 3 months, showing sufficient daily funds
  • Employment letter with salary, approved leave dates and a company contact
  • Proof of accommodation for your stay

Step-by-step application process

  1. 1. Check whether you need a visa, and where to apply

    Go to netherlandsworldwide.nl and select your country of residence — this determines your exact VFS Global centre.

  2. 2. Gather your documents

    Use the checklist tailored to your specific travel purpose (tourism, business, family visit, study, medical, etc.) from the VFS Global site.

  3. 3. Book your appointment directly with VFS Global

    Apply up to 6 months ahead (9 months for seafarers); book at least 45 days before travel.

  4. 4. Attend your appointment

    Submit your documents and passport, give fingerprints if 12 or older, answer questions about your trip, and pay the visa fee.

  5. 5. Track your application

    Use your track & trace code — don't contact the embassy directly, as processing can't be expedited by inquiry.

  6. 6. Collect your passport

    Collect it yourself with valid ID and proof of payment, or arrange authorized collection per VFS Global's instructions.
